Why Ultimate Marks exists

The business began with a recurring operating pattern.

Across very different operating environments, the same pattern kept appearing.

Capable people became the place difficult decisions, unresolved ambiguity, institutional context and organisational consequence accumulated. They became increasingly valuable to the organisation—and the organisation became increasingly dependent on them.

Ultimate Marks was established to identify that dependency, clarify the decision system around it and help organisations reduce the need for heroics from a few people.

Founder experience

The work is grounded in operating experience.

Ultimate Marks was founded by Ric Marks after a career spanning technical service delivery, corporate IT, government, infrastructure, operational leadership and business ownership.

That experience shaped an operator’s view of organisational effectiveness: less interested in how structures are supposed to work, and more interested in what actually happens when responsibility, authority, decision rights and consequence meet.

Today the work extends across executive advisory, organisational effectiveness, published research, public commentary and speaking.
